Speech development disorder

Speech development disorders may occur separately or in connection with other diseases, such as general development disorders or auditory disorders. In most cases, no clear causation can be found. weiter zur Prophylaxe...

Regular preventive checkups by the paediatrist (referred to as U-examinations - paediatric health screenings) can reveal risks for the speech development. The assessment of the parents or the closest attachment figures of the child is just as important. The early recognition and treatment of persistent auditory disorders (e.g. by middle ear effusions) is of special significance to avoid undesired effects on speech development.
As part of a child’s overall development, speech development also makes use of a vivid and attentive child-parent relationship. Adults instinctively adapt themselves to the child’s needs by speaking in simple sentences or repeating important aspects several times. Please do not correct your child directly in case he/she says something wrong but integrate the correct word or phrase into your own sentence - your child will absolutely be able to draw the important information out of it!

Children are suspected of having a speech development disorder if they speak more indistinctly or less or cannot express themselves audibly compared to children of the same age. In addition, language understanding may also be affected. weiter zur Diagnostik...

The diagnostics of speech disorders include all fields of communication skills. This starts upon the examination of the speech organs and the ears, the hearing diagnostics and the language skills by the physician. In doing so, the type and the extent of the disorder are determined but also the child’s strengths are identified, which represents one of the most important aspects of the treatment. weiter zur Therapie...

The causes of a speech disorder, such as e.g. persistent auditory disorders, should be eliminated as soon as possible. A speech development disorder is treated individually by means of exercise therapy. The speech exercise therapy is predominantly carried out by speech therapists. In case of additional development disorders, a coordinated promotion concept including different treatment methods is required.
